The planned implementation date of 1 July 2025 has now been moved to 31 January 2027. This decision, announced by the UK government, provides businesses with additional time to prepare for the new requirements, while also delaying the enforcement of important inspections.\r\n<h2>What has been postponed?<\/h2>\r\nThe postponement concerns the following requirements for medium-risk plant products, including various fruit and vegetable types:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>- Mandatory phytosanitary certification for products originating from the EU;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>- Advance notification through digital systems such as IPAFFS;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>- Physical inspections upon arrival at UK border control posts.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Reason for postponement<\/h2>\r\nAccording to the British International Freight Association (BIFA), the decision was made under pressure from industry, particularly the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC). This organization emphasized that implementing the controls at this time would lead to supply chain disruptions, increased costs for importers, and potential price hikes for consumers.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, the UK government wants to use this period to negotiate a sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement with the European Union, which could reduce or eliminate routine inspections on food imports between the UK and the EU.\r\n\r\n\"The UK Government has announced that the introduction of SPS controls on imports of medium risk fruit and vegetables from the EU has been postponed until 31 January 2027.\"\r\n\u2014 British International Freight Association, 2 June 2025 (https:\/\/bifa.org\/2025\/06\/02\/import-checks-on-medium-risk-fruit-and-vegetables-from-the-eu-delayed\/)\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n<h2>What does this mean for importers and exporters?<\/h2>\r\nThe postponement means that companies have more time to prepare, but it is not a reason to be complacent. The obligations are not being cancelled\u2014only delayed. Companies are advised to use this time to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Identify medium-risk products in their portfolio;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Coordinate with suppliers about certification capabilities;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Prepare technically for IPAFFS and other digital reporting systems;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Adjust logistics planning and contracts to accommodate potential import delays.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Looking ahead<\/h2>\r\nThe new postponement once again highlights the complexity of cross-border trade in the post-Brexit era.
